The car was a 1958 Buick Special, two-tone green and cream, with a steering wheel the size of a dinner plate. I was sixteen and terrified. Not of the car — of disappointing him.
Every Saturday morning that summer, we'd drive out to the empty lot behind the grain elevator on Route 9. He'd sit in the passenger seat with his window down, arm resting on the door, like he had nowhere else in the world to be.
'Easy on the clutch,' he'd say. 'She'll tell you when she's ready.'
I stalled that Buick forty, maybe fifty times. And not once did he raise his voice. He'd just say: 'That's alright. Try again.'
